How to Choose a Crate for a Labradoodle

crate for mini labradoodle

Finding the right crate for your Labradoodle puppy is essential to their well being, safety, and happiness. Crates are used for a variety of reasons including safely traveling with your pet and creating a safe environment for your puppy while you are out of the house.

Use Case: Home or Travel?

The first aspect you need to determine is the reason you need the crate and where you want to put it. Do you plan to travel with your Labradoodle? Or is this dog crate just going to stay at home? Once you make that decision it will narrow down your options.

If a travel dog crate is your goal, choose crates that have a carry handle for easy use. Travel crates often feature durable fabric plus doors and windows that can be zipped up or down. The window areas have a mesh that allows your Labradoodle puppy to see out and at the same time provide optimal ventilation and circulation. The downside is that if your Labradoodle puppy scratches and bites, they may tear the mesh.

Travel

These convenient carrying crates are great for traveling by car, train, or plane with your Labradoodle. If you are taking a flight, contact the airlines directly to find out the specific pet travel guidelines that need to be followed. The travel crates on this list are designed to meet these guidelines.

Home

If home use is the reason you need a crate for your puppy, there’s a wide range of options mentioned on the list above. Sturdy wire and steel crates are popular choices among Labradoodle parents who have puppies that like to escape from their crate.

These sturdy crates keep your puppy safely inside and feature slide latches that prevent the most curious and mischievous pets from opening the door.

Potty Trained?

Does your puppy tend to make a mess while in their crate? If so, then choose a dog crate that comes with a removable bottom shelf that is easy to clean. Plastic trays are extremely convenient for puppies who aren’t potty-trained yet.

Always consider your puppy’s specific needs to ensure the crate has the right features that will keep your pet safe, comfortable, and happy.

What size crate should I get for my Labradoodle?

kennel for Labradoodle puppy

When choosing a crate for your Labradoodle puppy also consider how quickly they are going to grow. Labradoodles puppies grow fast and they can outgrow their crate which means you may need to purchase another crate in just a few short months or less.

Instead of finding a crate that fits your Labradoodle puppy at their current size, try to think ahead to the weight and size they will be as an adult and choose the crate size accordingly.

Most dog crates come with a free divider that is easy to install. It’s perfect for Labradoodle puppies that will grow into their crate. As your puppy grows you move the divider to increase their space inside the crate for optimal comfort levels. Eventually, the divider will be completely removed once your Labradoodle is fully able to use the entire crate.

The divider is also helpful if you have two puppies that will share the same crate. The divider splits the space and gives each puppy its own territory.

When choosing a crate for the first time it’s wise to measure your puppy first. Use a soft measuring tape to learn the size of your dog from the tip of their nose to the tip of their tail and from the top of their back/shoulder to the tip of their paw. An excellent way to get this measurement is while your dog is sleeping or resting stretched out on the floor or standing straight up.

Once you know the measurements add extra inches to each measurement because the rule is, your dog needs to be able to stand up in the crate without hitting their head on the roof and turn around without being cramped.

It’s also wise to get a larger crate so you can put a soft bed inside for your puppy to relax as well as a few toys and some water, treats or food.

In general, here are the crate sizes we recommend for the various Labradoodle sizes:

  1. Mini Labradoodle Crate Size: Mini Labradoodles typically weigh up to 30 or 35 pounds and stand 15 to 20 inches tall. We recommend that you get a dog crate that is at least 25 inches in length. If you think your mini Labradoodle may grow larger than expected, you should opt for a 30-inch crate.
  2. Medium Labradoodle Crate Size: Medium Labradoodles stand 19 to 22 inches and weigh up to 45 pounds. You’ll want a dog crate that is around 36 inches in length.
  3. Standard Labradoodle Crate Size: Standard Labradoodles can weigh up to 70 or 80 pounds. If you have a standard sized Labradoodle, you’ll want a dog crate that is at least 42 inches in length.

Labradoodle Crate Training

dog crate labradoodle

Crates have got a bad rap due to the fear of imprisoning a dog. The good news is that dogs actually enjoy being in a crate because it recreates the den-like experience. When living in the wild dogs use dens to protect themselves from predators. The dark cozy feeling helps them feel safe and relaxed, not imprisoned.

The following steps will help you crate train your Labradoodle puppy successfully:

  • Find the right crate – As mentioned earlier you need to choose the right crate for your specific Labradoodle puppy. Making the crate comfortable by placing a bed and a few toys make it feel like their very own little safe space they can enjoy.
  • Create a mindset – Labradoodle puppies don’t know much about crates so you need to teach them to not be afraid. An excellent way to allow them to become familiar is to let them sniff and explore the crate on their own. It helps to put a few of their favorite treats inside to encourage them to become familiar with the interior of the crate. Placing your puppy in the crate when they are sleepy will teach them it’s the perfect place for them to rest and remain calm.
  • Offer a reward – Use positive training methods by rewarding your Labradoodle for going inside the crate on their own. As soon as you see your dog enter the crate give them a treat and tell them “good boy or good girl.” This reward will make them understand they are doing something pleasing for their owner and it will encourage them to continue repeating the good behavior.
  • Build up time – In the beginning stages of crate training only allow your Labradoodle to be inside the crate for 10 minutes at a time then slowly build up the time from that point. However, if your dog looks peaceful and calm sleeping in the crate you don’t need to use the 10-minute timing method. That method is best used when your dog is awake while inside the crate.
  • Make it fun – Your Labradoodle needs to view the crate as something they like and that is fun to use. A great way to make using the crate fun is to play a game of fetch and toss the ball inside of the crate and allow them to go and get it. The same game is highly effective when using treats as well.
  • Remove the collar and tags – Removal of the collar and tags is mandatory since it can be a choking hazard for your Labradoodle. Collars and tags can get caught between the bars on the crate and prevent your dog from moving. Some dogs can get strangled due to this situation. Instead, remove the collar and tags from your dog before placing them in the crate.
  • Spy on your dog – Use a baby cam or other camera equipment to spy on your dog when you leave the house. This will give you an idea about how your dog feels about the crate and if more training is needed.

Labradoodles learn at their own pace. Even intelligent Labradoodles need to be trained and the time frame depends on the individual dog. Chances are you might have two dogs that learn at different levels and timing. Always stay calm when training your dogs and use positive reinforcement instead of anger and yelling. Eventually, your dog will use its crate successfully and long term.

Conclusion for Best Crate for a Labradoodle

Start crate training your dog with any of the strong, safe, and comfortable dog crates on the list above. There are all types of crates that will work well with a Labradoodle. In general, we recommend a mesh wire crate if your Labradoodle still scratches or is teething. However, if you want to travel with your Labradoodle, it’s more convenient to choose a fabric dog crate because they are lighter in weight. We hope you found a great option on our list!
