Summer is almost here! The rain has stopped, the flowers are blooming, the sun is out, and the weather is warming up. Our Doodles have been cooped up and they’re ready to release all that energy!
There are numerous different summertime activities that you and your Doodle can enjoy together to get the most from the sunshine season. Some outdoor ideas for your Doodle include going for a walk, taking a hike, going camping, running on the sand at the beach, and making furry friends at the dog park.
What do all these summertime opportunities have in common, though? Ticks and fleas that can carry disease. With the start of summer, you’ll want to make sure your Doodle is protected and healthy throughout these warmer months.
Fleas and Ticks: Tiny Pests, Big Problem
Your dog has been romping in the yard, enjoying their renewed freedom from the indoors. Whether you live in a warm climate or a cooler one, this is a big deal for your canine companion!
But as your pup plays, there’s the potential that they’ll pick up pests – namely fleas and ticks – that can harm your dog, you, and your family. So, what’s the big deal about fleas and ticks, anyway? Can’t you just squish the bugs, end of story?
Not exactly. Let’s take a look.
Fleas Carry Disease
Most of us have seen a flea. They’re tiny, flat, raindrop-shaped insects that jump from host to host. Fleas prefer the warmer weather and they’re attracted to both carbon dioxide and heat, making you and your pet the ideal hosts for these pests.
These pests can transmit a range of illnesses, some of which are easily treatable while others are trickier. Fortunately, there are medications available to safeguard your pup from these risks.
Ticks Carry Disease, Too
Ticks come in a wide range of shapes, colors, markings, and sizes, but most ticks have eight legs and highly identifiable mouthparts. Regardless of which type of tick finds your furry friend, it’s important to be vigilant about your pup’s health.
