This study was conducted to rank the top 50 most popular dog breeds by analyzing hundreds of dog breeds using a comprehensive approach that combined online popularity from both Instagram and global monthly search interests. The methodology encompassed the following key steps:
Data Collection:
- Instagram Data: The popularity of various dog breeds on Instagram was gauged by counting the number of hashtags related to each breed. This included both singular and plural forms of the breed names.
- Global Monthly Search Volume Data: The worldwide interest in each dog breed was quantified by collecting global monthly search volume data using the SEMrush tool. This provided an insight into how many times each breed was searched per month online.
Data Processing:
- Normalization: The search volume and Instagram hashtag counts were normalized to ensure a fair comparison between breeds with varying levels of online presence.
- Weighted Averaging: A weighted average approach was applied to combine the two data sources. The global search volume was assigned a weight of 35%, and the Instagram hashtag count a weight of 65%, reflecting the emphasis on social media popularity.
Ranking and Analysis:
- Calculation of Total Scores: Each breed was assigned a total score based on the weighted average of search volume and Instagram popularity.
- Ranking: The breeds were then ranked from 1 to 50 based on their total scores, with the highest score indicating the most popular breed.
This methodology ensured a comprehensive and balanced view of dog breed popularity, combining the impact of digital engagement and global interest.
Dr. Sabrina Kong graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in England in 2016 and has been working at a small animal clinic in Northern California since then. She grew up in the Bay Area and got her bachelor’s degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. She also became a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner through a program at the University of Tennessee.
When she isn’t in the clinic taking care of her four-legged patients, she enjoys traveling and trying new foods with her friends and her three-legged dog, Apollo. She adopted Apollo from her clinic when he was a puppy with numerous health issues. Dr. Kong truly cares about taking care of animals.
